Flashing back to Coachella Weekend 1…

April 17, 2015

I’m having flashbacks to Coachella Weekend 1… Wishing Coachella a happy Weekend 2!

Besides the Masters, hockey playoffs and the ramp up to the NBA playoffs, it’s music festival season! Last weekend I attended my fourth Coachella in a row. Usually I attend weekend 2 but this year I was fortunate enough to snag a Weekend 1 ticket and place to stay thanks to my wonderful Canadian friend Christina. I got to see all the acts first without the spoilers.

Here are the 5 necessary Coachella items I won’t leave home without:

Sunblock…It’s the desert with little sun cover.
A bottle to hold water…Of course empty because Coachella is so strict about what you can bring in.
Hats…I love a good sun hat with a wide brim. I even found one to fit my head with all the hair from my twists this year.
Allergy medicine…It’s the desert/valley and the flowers are in full bloom.
A bandana…To cover my face walking back to the car. It’s the desert and there is a ton of dust.

Here are the 5 acts I am happy I saw:

Alabama Shakes…Probably my favorite and Brittany Howard can saaaannnnngggg.
Sylvan Esso…They are from Durham and very fun.
Hozier…A beautiful voice.
Deorro…I love the Sahara tent and DJ music.
David Guetta…I love this man. He is super fun, high energy, loves what he does and you can tell. I remember the first time I saw him at Coachella 4 years ago and I will see him whenever I can in the future.

Here are the 5 things that were a little off:

Ratatat…In the Sahara tent? I was fooled into thinking it would be another dance party.
Fitz and the Tantrums, David Guetta and Florence and the Machine all playing at the same time Sunday night. I wanted to see Fitz again! Can we spread these acts out next time Coachella?
Alt-J…I can’t understand what they are singing but the new guitarist is super cute.
Black-eyed Peas…They came out with David Guetta as his special guests. Taboo was using his phone to video, the song “This is Awesome” is not awesome, and Fergie looked nothing like Fergie. I even thought it was a fake Fergie. It still might be, but I still love David Guetta.
Drake…Yes I saw the Madonna dementor kiss. Honestly I couldn’t even tell it was Madonna at first, but whoever it was definitely sucked the life out of Drake.

My funniest Coachella moment:

If an 18 year old calls you a cougar does that make you a cougar?
So I get it…Coachella is for younguns, but I find myself drawn to Coachella due to its proximity and number of acts available to see. I must admit I get into the Coachella atmosphere and I remember how much I love live music. I even found myself craving felt wide brimmed hats, crop tops and metallic temporary tattoos. I thought I blended in pretty well, but when David Guetta played Wonderwall in his set and my friend and I were the only ones singing along around us, I realized I am on the older side of the typical Coachella audience. Then some young high schooler asked us if we were cougars since we knew all the words to Wonderwall. People think I should have been offended and slapped him, but you can’t get offended by someone who doesn’t matter to you. So to that 18 year old: I know I’m no where near cougar age but I do consider myself a puma in training.

Since this is a sports blog, I should write a little about sports…

Here are the my top 5 events in sports that happened since Coachella:

Jordan Spieth became the second youngest golfer to win the Masters at age 21 – Tiger Woods holds the youngest record of course. All the guys were watching at Coachella last weekend and I watched them watch golf while laying by the sweet pool at the house we rented.

Tyus Jones is the third member (Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow) of this year’s championship Duke team to declare for the NBA draft. So is 5 enough? Hope we pick up some players next year…

Aaron Hernandez, ex New England Patriot was convicted of first degree murder. A thug is a thug no matter what uniform you put on it…

NHL hockey playoffs have begun. I don’t watch hockey, but at least I know that.

Lastly, the clay court season has begun in the tennis world. Rafael Nadal doesn’t consider himself the favorite but continues to win in Monte Carlo.

Shout out of the Day…
Jewell Loyd of Notre Dame for being the #1 draft pick in the WNBA draft. She will join the Seattle Storm!

Thank you for reading my Coachella blog. Have fun at weekend 2 to all the fellow Coachellites out there! Dance like no one is watching…
